Description
Holy Trinity School, now a house, was originally founded by Sir Charles Hoghton in 1709 and rebuilt in 1838, with further enlargements in 1873. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone and features a slate roof. It has three bays and two storeys, with large single-storey wings on each side. Designed in the Tudor style, it includes a first-floor band, diagonal buttresses at the corners, and recessed mullioned windows with round-headed lights and hoodmoulds. Each bay has one five-light window at the ground floor and two two-light windows above.
At the north gable, there is a gabled two-storey porch with a moulded arched doorway and a carved stone tablet above depicting a bull and a griffon. The east side wing features a prominent side-wall chimney stack with offsets and coupled octagonal flues topped with moulded caps. To the right of the chimney, there is a two-light window, and in the gable wall, a very large five-light mullioned window with a single-light opening at the apex. In the angle, there is a lean-to porch leading to the main range, which has a moulded Tudor-arched doorway, a window in the side wall, one window to the left, and two above, similar to those at the front. All gables are topped with stone coping, kneelers, and apex finials. A relocated datestone in the garden wall indicates that the wing was added in 1873 by Sir H de H. The building is included for its group value with the Church of the Holy Trinity located on the opposite side of the road.
