Description

Farmhouse, dated 1692 on the lintel of the inner doorway, and subsequently altered. Constructed of coursed squared sandstone, with a slate roof and a ridge chimney. The building follows a three-bay baffle-entry plan. It is two storeys high and features a continuous dripcourse. A modern porch, aligned with the ridge chimney, is situated at the junction of the first and second bays. The lintel of the inner doorway has the letter "G" carved in relief. The front has four slightly-recessed mullioned windows on each floor, with the window arrangement being two, one, six, and one west to east; at ground floor, there are nine, five, three, and two lights; above, there are three, one, five, and three lights. The left gable has a similar three-light window at ground floor, and another that has been altered into a casement window above, both with hoodmoulds. The rear elevation has five similar windows on the first floor, with five lights in the centre; otherwise, the windows are two lights. A particularly notable feature of the rear is an unusual two-storey gabled porch or bay, possibly a 19th-century addition, located at the junction of the first and second bays. This is constructed of large dressed blocks with deeply splayed corners at ground floor, and the upper level corbelled over them. It has a doorway in the centre, flanked by two-light windows in the corners, a similar window on the first floor, and a Celtic head in the apex of the gable coping. Inside, there is a baffle-entry heck, an inglenook bressummer, ovolo-moulded beams in the housepart, and imitation beams in the first bay (which are not made of timber).
