Description

Marsh Lane Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 17th century and extended in the 18th century. It is built of coursed squared sandstone rubble with quoins, featuring a roof made of corrugated sheet, stone slate, and slate on the addition, along with brick chimneys at the original gables. The building has a two-bay end-baffle-entry plan, with an addition on the right-hand side.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a doorway at the right-hand end of the second bay, a 2-light window in the first bay, and a 3-light mullioned window in the second bay. Between these windows, at mid-level, is a 2-light mullion window, likely a stairlight, all of which have hoodmoulds. On the first floor, there is a horizontal rectangular window that has been converted into a 2-light casement. The addition on the right features two windows at ground level and one above. The left gable has a 3-light chamfered mullion window on the first floor, while the right gable has a door and a blocked window at ground level, with a 2-light mullioned window above. The rear of the building has been mostly altered but retains a 4-light mullioned window with a hoodmould at the ground floor of the second bay.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is believed to contain an inglenook fireplace bressummer and beams, as well as a central lateral staircase, similar to the internal arrangements found in Cliff Farmhouse (1696), Morris Farmhouse (1693), and Warth Farmhouse, all located in Heapey.
