Description

Bateson's Farmhouse and the attached barn is a farmhouse dated 1793, constructed from watershot coursed squared sandstone with quoins, and features a facade of dressed stone with rusticated raised quoins. The building has a slate roof that is set on two levels. It is a double-depth, two-bay house with its gable facing the road and the barn attached at the right end. The farmhouse is two storeys tall and almost symmetrical, featuring gable chimneys. The doorway is slightly offset to the right of centre and has plain jambs, a moulded frieze, and a cornice. There are two windows on each floor, all coupled vertical rectangles with plain surrounds and altered glazing. Between the first-floor windows is a round-headed datestone inscribed with "L." The left gable has two inserted windows at the ground floor and a square attic window marked "A A 1793." The rear of the house has a plain doorway aligned with the front entrance, a large rectangular window to the left, coupled square windows, and a single square window on the first floor above. A plain sill band runs across the entire range, including the barn. The barn, which is set back slightly from the front of the house and has a lower roof level, features an unusual square-headed wagon entrance with long-and-short jambstones and splayed voussoirs.
