Description

This is a house, originally built around 1780, with remnants of earlier construction. It was altered in the mid-19th century when it was divided into two separate houses, numbered 42 and 44 Clifton. The exterior is of mottled brick with a painted stone plinth, and has a slate roof. The building is three stories high and five bays wide; number 44 has three bays with a doorway in the right-hand bay, and number 42 has two bays that are widely spaced with a central doorway. Brick bands mark the stories. The windows are sash windows. Ground and first-floor windows have segmental brick arches, while the second-floor windows have shallower arches. Ground-floor windows have hinged shutters with two recessed panels. First-floor windows in the two left-hand bays have louvred shutters that slide below a rail with a timber valance. The fourth window has an external blind box. Number 44 features a doorcase with fluted consoles, an open dentilled pediment, and a plain semicircular overlight, above a door with six raised and fielded panels. The door to number 42 is similar, but the doorcase has plain pilasters and brackets, and a simple open pediment. A chimney sits in front of the ridge, aligned with the door to number 42, and a second chimney is behind the ridge towards the left. The left-hand return gable wall is one bay and is treated in a similar style. The interior, according to records, contains a staircase with slender turned balusters and two original fireplaces. This building possesses group value from the contribution it makes to the Clifton area.
