Description

The Former Memorial Gymnasium at St Peter's School, now a library, was designed by Francis Bedford and has a foundation stone dated 1894. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings and features a pantiled roof. The building is a single storey with a south-east wall consisting of five bays separated by buttresses. The windows in this wall have two cinquefoiled mullioned lights, two transoms, and leaded glazing, with the lower part of the left-hand window featuring blind stone panels.

The right-hand bay serves as the entrance and includes an ashlar panel with a moulded surround that rises to a central square sundial, which has raised carved numerals and a Latin inscription. Below this is a window with two low cinquefoiled ogee lights above a moulded Tudor-arched doorway. The oak door features applied mouldings in geometrical patterns. Above the archway, there are carved shields of arms on either side. To the right of the doorway is a foundation stone inscribed with a dedication.

The north-east gable wall, facing the road, has a window with four cinquefoiled ogee lights and a transom under a straight head with Perpendicular tracery. The south-west gable wall features a window with two cinquefoiled ogee lights with a transom on either side of a central doorway. This doorway has a door with raised mouldings in geometrical patterns, a moulded Tudor archway, and a panel above decorated with leaf and rose motifs, including a central shield with crossed keys. Below the apex of the gable, there is a mullioned window with four cinquefoiled lights. The interior has not been inspected.
