Description

64 and 66 Clifton is a house dating from the late 17th century, with some remains from the 16th century, and was restored in 1962. It is constructed of brick with rendered dressings and retains internal elements of timber framing. The roof is covered with pantiles, with the lower courses made of plain tiles, and the building showcases an artisan mannerist style.

The house has two storeys plus an attic. Its facade features two wide, shaped curved gables and a narrower gable on the left above a porch bay. There are two rendered moulded string courses, and the upper storey brickwork is fully rusticated with channelled rustication. The windows, which have leaded glazing, include a mix of 20th-century steel and timber casements. Under both main gables, there are two-storey canted bay windows supported by rendered moulded brick corbelling and topped with tiled roofs. The windows have rendered surrounds and mullions, with two lights facing forward and one to each side. Each main gable also contains an attic window with two chamfered mullioned lights. The first-floor window of the porch has a rendered chamfered surround.

On the ground floor, the outer porch doorway features a Tudor-arched head and a surround rendered to simulate stone dressings, complete with quoins, impost blocks, and a shaped lintel. The inner door is a re-used pine door with geometrical panelling. The gables are topped with finials.

The interior includes 17th-century brick fireplaces with arched heads and an 18th-century fitted corner cupboard.
