Description
This early to mid-19th century house was originally a single dwelling, now divided into two separate properties at numbers 118 and 120 on Kempston Urban High Street. Number 118 is constructed of yellow brick, while number 120 has a darker, more mottled brick facade. Both have slate roofs, with the roof of number 118 being hipped. A single-pile block was added to the west elevation of the original building, as part of a larger development including numbers 116, 118 and 120.
The west elevation of number 118 features sash windows with glazing bars, each set under a gauged flat arch. There are two windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor. A central doorway has a partly-glazed door and a rectangular fanlight, sheltered by an open porch. The porch is thought to have been brought from elsewhere, and is distinguished by decorative cast iron panels at the top and slender columns on additional bases. Number 120 has a canted bay window on the ground floor with leaded lights, and a two-light casement window with glazing bars and a single-light casement window on the first floor. A C18 wooden doorway, with a semi-circular arch, console keystone, impost bands, rusticated surround, Roman Doric fluted pilasters, an entablature with triglyphs, guttae, and a dentil cornice, has also been imported. The building is listed for its group value with neighboring properties.
