Description
Thealby Barn, located 20 metres north of Green Hill Farmhouse, is a barn dating from the 16th to 17th century, with later 17th to 18th century walls and roof, and minor alterations from the 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure with coursed ironstone rubble walls, red brick dressings, and a pantile roof. The barn has four bays of aisled frame and opposed entrances in the second bay from the east. The front facing Darby Road has brick quoins and jambs around the wagon entrance, which has double plank doors. There are splayed breathers on either side with brick surrounds, and a late 19th century part-glazed opening under a wooden lintel to the right. The barn has low eaves with a dentilled cornice and a steeply-pitched roof with brick coped and tumbled gables.
Inside, the original aisled frame is evident, with surviving arcade plates, three tie-beams, and a pair of arcade posts featuring both curved and straight braces. The walls flanking the entrances have replaced two pairs of posts, and the end walls, which incorporate former oak framing timbers, have replaced the end trusses. The barn also has oak wall plates and a well-preserved eight-bay pine roof with staggered butt purlins and massive pegged tenons.
