Description
Thealby Hall is a house built around 1800, with a later 19th-century rear extension and a section added in 1982. It was likely constructed for a member of the Sheffield family. The building is made of yellow-grey gault brick and features a wooden eaves cornice and a slate roof. It stands two storeys high with five symmetrical bays. A set of stone steps leads to the central entrance, which is framed by attached Doric columns supporting an open dentilled pediment. The entrance includes a panelled door beneath a radial fanlight, set in panelled reveals and soffit. The ground floor has unequal 20-pane sash windows, while the upper floor features 16-pane sashes, all with ashlar cills and channelled and keyed stucco cambered arches. The eaves cornice is bold and dentilled, and the hipped roof has end stacks with blue brick caps and square chimney pots. The left and right returns of the building have angle pilasters that continue the eaves cornice.
Inside, the stair-hall is adorned with moulded plaster cornices and a ceiling featuring a central fan motif. The staircase has slender turned balusters and a sweeping handrail. The front rooms on the ground floor boast boldly-reeded plaster cornices with lion's head and flower bosses, and the north room has an arched alcove with fan decoration in a reeded architrave and reveal. Other original features include doors, architraves, and window shutters. The two chimney-pieces in the ground floor front rooms, one made of marble with a carved figure centre-piece, were added in 1982. The 1982 extension is not of special interest.
