Description

This is a barn located 10 metres west of Grey's Cottage, dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, featuring some red brick in English bond, and has a roof primarily covered with slate, with valleys of handmade red plain tiles. The barn consists of three bays aligned northwest to southeast, with a 17th-century midstrey on the southwest side and a 19th-century lean-to extension in the southern angle.

The structure includes jowled posts and curved braces that are trenched outside the heavy studding in the northeast wall, while the southwest wall and midstrey have primary straight bracing with heavy studding. There are grooves indicating the original infill of wattle and daub, which has been removed. The northeast wallplate shows two edge-halved and bridled scarfs, suggesting the removal of an earlier midstrey on that side. The northwest end has been infilled with brickwork made from various sizes of reused bricks set in lime mortar. Mortices for arched braces to the tiebeams have been removed.

The main roof was rebuilt in the 17th century. The midstrey, which is taller than the main building, is constructed from 17th-century materials and features jowled posts, along with some smoke-blackened rafters from a medieval hall that have been reused. These rafters are pegged at the apices and supported by clasped purlins. The inner tiebeams of the main building have been tusk-tenoned through the inner posts of the midstrey, functioning as anchor-beams, which is a rare construction technique. The threshing floor in the middle bay and midstrey consists of small bricks set on edge, while the floors of the outer bays have been treated with bitumen.
