Description

St. Osyth Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage that has been altered in the 20th century. It features a combination of painted brick and plastered timber framing, with a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The cottage has a two-room plan that is aligned northwest to southeast, with a central stack. The southwest wall curves at the northwest end. There is a 19th-century crosswing to the southeast, constructed of plastered timber framing and roofed with asbestos tiles. The building is two storeys high.

On the curved wall to the west, there is one sash window with eight lights on each floor, which are 20th-century replicas of the originals, set in their original openings. The ground floor has a segmental arch above the window. The entrance features a four-panel door. The roof of the original cottage is hipped at the southeast end and quarter-conical at the northwest end.

On the northeast elevation, there is a 20th-century square bay window with casements on the ground floor, along with two 20th-century casement windows on the first floor and a 20th-century door. The stack is made of yellow brick. The cottage is reputed to have been a former toll cottage, as noted by B.L. Kentish in "Kelvedon and its Antiquities" published in 1974. The cottage is included for its group value.
