Description
No. 5 Scale Lane is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the late 15th century and underwent alterations in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The building was restored in 1985-86 to reflect its early 19th-century appearance. It is constructed of 18th-century brick, with some original timber framing, and features a renewed pantile roof and an external side wall stack. The house has two storeys plus garrets and consists of a single bay.
The jettied facing gable includes a shallow bow window with glazing bars, flanked by two round-headed doorways that feature fielded six-panel doors and fanlights, all of which are early 19th-century elements. Above the bow window, there is a tripartite sash window, and above that, a three-light casement window. Restored timber framing with diagonal braces can be seen under the rendering on the first floor. Inside, the ground floor retains original joists and a span beam.
