Description

No. 1 Bishop Lane is a late 18th-century house, subsequently used as a restaurant, with alterations made in the mid 19th century and late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, with a whitewashed exterior, stone dressings, and a hipped pantile roof featuring single side wall and party wall stacks. It has a plinth, moulded wooden eaves, a gutter, and brackets. The house is three storeys high plus a basement, and has a facade of five bays by three windows. Windows have corbelled sills. The first floor has a plain sash window to the left and four 12-pane sashes with bars to the right. Above this, there are two top-hung casements and three 9-pane sashes. The ground floor has a central round-arched doorway with a rendered doorcase and concrete steps leading to a 20th-century door. To either side of the doorway, there are two 12-pane sashes. The basement has two blocked openings to the left and two small board doors with segmental heads to the right. The left return, overlooking High Street, features three reglazed 12-pane sashes, with a 9-pane sash flanked to the right by two top-hung casements above. Below, there is a central blank space flanked by single plain sashes, with two low, flat-headed board doors in the basement.
