Description

Ye Olde Black Boy Public House is a public house dating from around 1700, which was altered in 1926 for T Lindsey & Co. It is constructed of red brick with painted render and features a steep slate roof with a gable stack. The building has three storeys plus an attic.

The street front has a 20th-century pub front that includes a central three-light pointed arch window with leaded glazing. To the left, there is a false doorway, and to the right, a panelled door with a glazed overlight. The painted façade is adorned with plain pilasters and a linking cornice above. The first floor has three three-light cross casement windows with leaded glazing, while the second floor features three two-light windows. A single dormer window is located behind a coped parapet.

Inside, the public house retains a largely complete interior from 1926. The front smoke room has wainscot panelling, exposed beams, and an original fire surround with an over-mantel featuring a carved relief of a 'black boy'. The main bar has similar decorative features, including panelled walls and a curved panelled bar. Upstairs, there is a function room and bar, both with raised and fielded panelling and high-quality 18th-century style fireplaces with over-mantels. This public house retains important 20th-century interiors.
