Description

No. 9 Market Place, formerly known as the Custom House, is a building constructed between 1875 and 1877, designed by J. Williams of the Office of Works. The building has been altered in the late 20th century. It is made of ashlar stone with 20th-century tile hanging on the right side. The roof is not visible.

The structure features a plinth, rusticated ground and first floors, a ground floor band, and a dentillated main cornice with modillions. It is four storeys high and has a four-window range. On the first floor, there are four windows with moulded surrounds and triangular pediments on brackets, each with small linked balconies featuring balustrades. Above this, there are four more windows with moulded surrounds on a moulded sill band, topped with cornices on brackets. There is a cornice between the floors, and above again, four windows with moulded surrounds and a continuous lintel.

The ground floor includes an entrance on the right with panelled pilasters and long ornamented brackets that support a panelled cornice. The stone doorcase has a fluted coved surround, moulded six-panel double doors, a panelled lintel, and an overlight. To the left, there are three tall windows with moulded surrounds, panelled reveals, and overlights. An inscription just below the cornice states that it was a "Post & Telegraph Office."
