Description

A three-storey office building of 1848, designed for the Hull Charterhouse by Cuthbert Brodrick, with later 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of brick with a painted first floor, ashlar dressings, and a modillion main cornice. The roof is not visible. It features a nine-bay window range on the upper floors, with round-headed wooden framed cross casements. Above the central escutcheon on the first floor is an inscription reading: AD 1848 + GEORGE MOORE CARRICK + MASTER. The ground floor incorporates three late 20th-century shop fronts under a fascia and cornice. The building has functioned as offices with shops beneath, previously housing the newspaper offices of The London Gazette, and is currently occupied by flats, offices, and shops. Cuthbert Brodrick, a Hull-based architect, was articled to Henry Francis Lockwood and rose to prominence in the 1850s, designing prominent buildings such as Leeds Town Hall and the Leeds Corn Exchange.
