Description

Victoria Chambers is an office building dating from 1882 to 1889, designed by T Brownlow Thompson. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a slate mansard roof with coped gables and two panelled ridge stacks. It stands three storeys plus attics and comprises a six-window range.

The slightly projecting central entrance bay is flanked by full-height pilaster strips. The upper floors of the central bay feature two plain sashes, with two relief panels positioned between the floors. To either side of the central bay are a single plain sash on each floor, beyond which is a shallow oriel bow window with two plain sashes on each floor separated by a stone mullion. The attics have a centrally placed, shouldered gable topped with a segmental pediment, containing a round-arched plain sash. Flanking the oriel windows are smaller shaped gabled dormers, each with carved wood ornament, a segmental pediment, and a keystone, all containing a single round-headed plain sash.

The ground floor features a splayed round-arched ashlar entrance with steps, imposts, and a keystone. Above the entrance is a panel inscribed "Victoria Chambers." The double door has six lozenge-shaped panels and a plain overlight. To the right of the entrance is a single plain sash window, and to the left, a similar window, followed by a shouldered cart entrance with a chamfered lintel, a wooden infill panel, and a pair of plank doors. Above the cart entrance is a segment-arched overlight with a hoodmould, a shaped keystone, and a wrought-iron grille protecting the glazing.
