Description
Cogan House is an office building located at 17 Bowlalley Lane in Kingston upon Hull. Designed by the architects Smith & Brodrick, it was constructed between 1876 and 1878, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is made of brick, featuring ashlar and moulded brick dressings, and has slate roofs with two coped side-wall stacks.
It stands three storeys tall, plus attics, and has a nine-window range. Most windows are plain sashes, with those above the ground floor featuring round heads. The first floor has nine windows with moulded heads and imposts, while the upper floor has nine similar windows with plainer heads, set in recessed panels separated by pilaster strips. Above the entrance, three strips have moulded brackets.
A large off-centre dormer is situated above the cornice, adorned with a cornice and machicolations, featuring two pointed-arched sashes in recessed panels, topped by a shouldered moulded coped gable with a graduated round-headed triple window. To the right, there is a dormer with a moulded coped gable topped with a finial, which includes a pointed-arched sash and hoodmould. A similar double-gabled dormer is located to the left.
The entrance is off-centre, featuring a round-arched opening supported by corbels, with enriched spandrels, a cornice, and a balustrade. Inside the opening are a pair of shouldered doorways, with the left one having a moulded four-panel door. Each door is topped with a moulded tympanum and a cusped roundel above. To the left of the entrance are four plain sashes with flat heads, while to the right is a late 20th-century brick shop front that includes a transomed three-light window to the left and a door with an overlight to the right.
