Description

Ocean Chambers is an office building located at 54 Lowgate in Kingston upon Hull, constructed between 1899 and 1900 by the architectural firm Brodrick, Lowther & Walker. The building is designed in the Baroque Revival style and features ashlar stonework with a plain tile roof and three brick side wall stacks topped with stone coping.

The structure has three storeys and four storeys plus a basement and attics, arranged in a three-window range. The asymmetrical facade includes two canted bay windows, with the right bay extending three storeys and the left bay four storeys. These bays are adorned with five-light cross mullioned windows, supported by Ionic columns at the corners and flanked by Ionic pilasters.

In the center of the first floor, there is a three-light mullioned window above the entrance, with a four-light cross mullioned window above that, and another similar three-light window above that. To the right, a dormer with a coped gable features a three-light cross mullioned window and is topped with a niche that has a segmental pediment. To the left, a shouldered coped gable has two small windows separated by a panel under a cornice, topped with a niche featuring a broken segmental pediment and finial.

The right corner of the building has a canted design with a dentillated cornice and is topped with an ogee lead dome, which includes two three-light casements. The central entrance is framed by diced Ionic columns that support a segmental pediment on scroll brackets. The tympanum above the entrance features a high relief sculpture with a wreathed oval cartouche flanked by dolphins. The doorcase is moulded with a double keystone, leading to a recessed round-arched doorway. Additionally, there is a blocked four-light mullioned basement window below the bay window on the right.
