Description
No. 5 Westgate is a house and adjoining outhouse that was formerly a butcher's shop. It dates from the mid-18th century, with some alterations and an addition from the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and has a pantile roof.
The house is two storeys high and has three bays, while the outbuilding is a single storey with one bay. The house features a lobby entry off an off-centre hallway, with the outhouse located to the left. The entrance includes a 19th-century four-panel door with an overlight, set in a pilastered doorframe and flanked by 16-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there is a dummy window flanked by sashes that have glazing bars. All windows are equipped with stone sills and channelled wedge lintels that feature fluted keystones. The building has a stepped eaves course and a hipped roof with a banded central stack.
The outhouse has a stable door and a large fixed 6-pane window to the right, which is located beneath a canopy. It also features a plain coped parapet. Inside, the building has a principal rafter roof supported by tusk tenoned purlins. There is one section of early panelling that survives in the attic, which includes a panel with a thistle motif.
