Description
The North Cave War Memorial, made of Portland stone, is situated at the junction of Station Road and Westgate in North Cave, East Riding of Yorkshire.
It features a floriated Latin cross adorned with carved decorations, including white roses of Yorkshire. This cross is positioned atop a tapering octagonal shaft that ends in a crenelated cap. The shaft rises from a square plinth, which has decorative carvings that include another representation of the Yorkshire rose on top of a cross and a shield. The plinth is set on a three-tiered octagonal base, with the lowest tier displaying carved relief decoration.
On the plinth, a dedication for the First World War reads: "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH WHO/ FOUGHT AND IN EVER/ GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR GOD AND KING/ FOR RIGHT FOR FREEDOM/ AND FOR PEACE/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918."
The top tier of the base is inscribed with the names of the fallen on three faces, with "1939 – 45" on the rear face. The names continue on the second tier, which has the inscription "SEE YE TO IT/ THAT THESE SHALL NOT HAVE/ DIED IN VAIN" running around it. Additionally, there is an inscription for the 1951 Malayan War, which includes a name.
