Description
A pair of houses dating from around 1850, located on Alton Road in Oxton, Birkenhead. The houses are constructed with roughcast render and have a Welsh slate roof. They are symmetrically designed, each with a two-unit plan and an entrance at each end. The exterior features canted bays with round-arched panes in the sash windows, while the inner windows are 12-pane sashes set within moulded architraves. Upper windows are 12-pane sashes in plain architraves, with a decorative sill band running along the front. Bracketed eaves cornices are present, and angle quoins define the corners. Gable and axial stacks provide ventilation. The pair forms a group with numbers 5-7 and 9-11 Alton Road, and it is believed that these three pairs of houses were originally built together as a speculative development, as evidenced by a plan from 1858 by Mills and Fletcher.
