Description

This is a terrace of three houses located on Village Road in Oxton, Birkenhead. Built around 1850, the buildings are faced with lined-out stucco and have a Welsh slate roof. The terrace is symmetrically designed, with the outer bays projecting forward to accommodate the entrances. The left-hand entrance has a four-panelled door with a fanlight, incorporating stained glass. Above this door is a round-arched window. A modillion cornice runs below the attic storey. The central range features a projecting ground floor arcade, resembling a loggia. This area has round-arched, full-height windows set within architraves, accentuated by pilasters and key blocks, alternating with four-panelled doors, each having a side and overlight. The first floor has tall, two-light casement windows. Another modillion cornice is positioned below the attic storey, which contains small casement windows. The return elevation to Columbia Road has a three-window range, notable for semi-circular windows within a pedimented gable. Historical maps of Oxton (1847) and Birkenhead and Claughton cum Grange (1858), produced by Mills and Fletcher, surveyors, illustrate the terrace.
