Description
Melling House is a house that is currently used for farm storage. It is said to have a datestone from 1654, which is now covered with ivy, but it may date back to the 16th century. The building is constructed of stone with a stone slate roof and brick stacks. It has two storeys and four bays, with a projecting end bay on both facades. Some of the gables are coped.
On the north facade, the first bay features a gable and a horizontally sliding sash window. There is an inserted entrance and another horizontally sliding sash window to the right. The projecting end bay has double-chamfered mullioned windows with label moulds on both floors; the left return has a cross window and a lateral stack, while the right return has a lean-to porch.
The south facade is mostly covered in ivy and features double-chamfered mullioned windows and horizontally sliding sashes. There is a blocked entrance next to the projecting bay that has a small porch, along with a lateral stack. The returns have gable-end stacks.
Inside, some timber-framed cross walls are visible at the first-floor level, along with some upright timbers. There is a 20th-century open-fronted shed attached to the north facade. Additionally, there is a one-storey extension at the west gable end that connects this building to an outbuilding.
