Description

1 and 3 Mill Lane comprise a former smithy and two adjoining semi-detached houses, dating to 1885. The smithy is a single-story building constructed of brick with red sandstone dressings and red tiled roofs with gabled ends and diagonally clustered chimneys. It features a large pargetted gable, an 8-light stone mullioned window, a 4-centred arched doorway, and a 4-light window. The adjacent houses are two-storied and symmetrical, each with a pargetted gabled wing, plain bargeboards, a slight overhang, and a brick string course above the ground floor. Each house has a 4-light stone mullioned window on both floors, and a gabled half dormer window. The central portion features two 2-light windows on the first floor, a boarded door, and flanking windows below, all sheltered by a lean-to roof forming a porch between the two wings. These buildings are part of a loosely scattered group located on Mill Lane, North Park Road, South Park Road, and Glovers Brow, which retains the character of a village centre.
