Description
The obelisk is a commemorative structure located on a small green approximately 50 meters south of the Church of St Cuthbert in Southport. It dates from the 18th century and was originally situated at Worden Hall in Leyland before being moved to its current location in 1950. The obelisk is made of dressed gritstone blocks and has a square section. The pedestal is about 2 meters high and features a chamfered base, a broad band, and a cavetto-moulded cornice. There is a worn inscription around the east, north, and west sides that reads: "Rebuilt in Commemor / ation of the Glorious / [illegible]." The tall obelisk stands on block-and-ball feet and has panelled sides topped with a metal flaming sun finial. It forms a group with the Church of St Cuthbert and two old lamp posts at the corners of the green, as well as the Hesketh Arms Hotel, which faces the green from the east.
