Description
The Hesketh Arms Hotel is a public house that dates from the mid to late 18th century. It has been enlarged, altered, and internally remodelled over the years. The building features white painted render on brick and has a graduated slate roof with similarly rendered chimneys. Its irregular double-depth plan includes main ranges facing west and south, with additional structures at the rear.
The west front is two storeys high and has six irregularly placed windows. It features a moulded gutter cornice and four lead downspouts with large decorated hoppers. The entrance is slightly off-centre and was remodelled in 1932 as a recessed three-bay porch supported by Doric columns. To the left on the ground floor, there are five segmental-headed windows arranged in groups of two, two, and one, with a doorway between the two pairs. To the right, there are two tripartite sashed windows, all of which have glazing bars. The first floor has six sashed windows with raised sills and moulded surrounds; two on the left have 4/8 glazing, while the others have 3/6 glazing. The building has gable chimneys and three ridge chimneys.
The south front, or right-hand return, features a five-window range. It includes a 20th-century doorway, a bow window, and three small segmental-headed sashes on the ground floor, with 3/6 sashes above.
Inside, the hotel retains a good 18th-century open-string staircase and remnants of moulded plaster ceiling decoration, although the rest of the interior has been entirely remodelled.
The Hesketh Arms Hotel forms part of a significant group of buildings in the centre of the village, which includes the gate piers at the southwest corner of the Parish Hall, the entrance gateway to Meols Hall to the south, an obelisk, old lamp posts on the green, and several other properties on Botanic Road, as well as the Church of St Cuthbert and its associated items.
