SD3618NE BOTANIC ROAD, Churchtown 664-1/7/245 (South side) 15/11/72 Gate piers and gates at entrance to Meols Hall (Formerly Listed as: CHURCHTOWN Entrance Gates to Meols Hall)

Pair of gate piers with gates. Formerly at South Lodge of Bold Hall, removed to this site (probably in 1950s). Probably c1800. Sandstone ashlar piers, wrought-iron gates. Rusticated stone piers approx. 1m square and 3m high, with moulded cornices and shallow flat tops. Double carriage gates with single pedestrian side gates, in simple spear-headed form with arch bracing to the carriage gates and cross-bracing to the side gates, both sets hung on a pair of elaborate open-work standards which are rectangular in plan, with acorn finials to the corners, scrolled and circular decoration between the intermediate bars, and surmounted by tall scrolled brackets carrying lamp-holders. Forms group with Nos 100 & 102 (qv) approx. 10m north-west, and with Hesketh Arms opposite (qv).
