Description
The Dumb Steeple is an obelisk that likely dates from the late 18th century. It is a square stone column that tapers in three stages and is topped with a large ball finial. The upper stage features recesses on two opposing faces, which may have been intended for a plaque.
In April 1812, this location was the meeting point for 150 Luddites who planned an unsuccessful attack on Cartwright's Mill at Rawfolds, Liversedge. It is referred to as 'Dumb' because no bells were ever hung there. The structure has been recently moved slightly due to road alterations.
