Description
Robin Hood's Grave is a memorial and grave stone from the 18th century. It features hammer-dressed stone walls topped with ashlar copings, and at each of the four corners, there are fluted columns of Doric style capped with finials. The grave is enclosed by cast iron railings. Built into the north wall is a tablet with an 18th-century inscription written in Chaucerian language, which reads: 'Hear Underneath dis laitl stean Laz robert earl of Huntingtun Ne'er arcir ver az hie sa geud An pipl Kauld im robin heud Sick utlawz az hi an iz men Vil england nivr si agen Obiit 24 Kal Dekembris 1247'.
The enclosure also protects a fragment of the reputed grave, which was previously plundered for pieces believed to cure toothache. This information is noted in G. Hepworth's work, "Brighouse, its scenery and antiquities," published in Halifax in 1885.
