Description
The sundial at Priory Gardens in Kirklees Park dates back to 1617 and was reset on a new plinth in 1911. It was moved to its current position in 1989.
The sundial features a thin, square stone slab set horizontally, with a bronze gnomon that is likely a later replacement. It has inscribed hour lines and a chapter dial. The southern quadrant is marked with the year 1617, which is split to flank the Armytage coat of arms. Below the coat of arms are the initials IA and W. The northeast corner bears the inscription "CORRIGE PRETERITUM REGE PRESENS CERNE FUTURU," which translates to "learn from the past, regulate the present, discern the future." The northwest corner has the inscription "UT HORA SIC VITA FUGIT," meaning "As the hours fly, so flies the day."
The plinth is square with a simple chamfered base and cap, set on an octagonal flagstone step. The south face of the plinth is inscribed with "SEMPER PARATUS SED SINE SOLE SILEO," which translates to "I am always ready, but do not speak without the sun." The north face features the Armytage coat of arms in relief and is inscribed with "RE-ERECTED 1911 GJA MGA." The west face has the inscription "ME HIC POSVIT MMA 1989," meaning "MMA moved me here 1989."
