Description
The sundial, dating from the mid-19th century, is situated in the walled garden of Brinkburn Bothy. It was created by B. Armstrong of Ovingham, who signed the shaft. The sundial is made of sandstone and features a brass gnoma. It has a circular base that supports an octagonal shaft adorned with sunk trefoil-headed panels, leading up to a cuboctahedral block with fourteen faces. Each face, except for the top and bottom, has a separate dial, and the structure is topped with a ball finial on a tapering circular foot. Six of the twelve brass gnoma are missing. Each dial face measures twelve and three-quarter inches across and is marked with hourly Arabic numerals and lines, though some faces are weathered. The sundial was commissioned by the Fenwick family during the restoration of Brinkworth Priory and was originally installed at the Manor House there. Lancelot Fenwick later moved it to High House in 1952. It was listed in that location in 1988, and in 2015, the sundial was relocated to its current position.
