Description
Barclays Bank, located at 301 Aigburth Road, includes No. 2 Ashfield Road and was built around 1900 for the Bank of Liverpool. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It has two storeys with an attic, presenting two bays to Aigburth Road, a canted corner bay, and two bays to Ashfield Road.
The first floor has a sill course and a modillioned cornice. The Aigburth Road facade features a granite base, an elliptical-headed window flanked by round-headed windows with stone surrounds and rusticated heads, and iron-framed casements. There are two first-floor cross windows with King mullions. The attic is topped with a stone-coped gable adorned with scrolls and a segmental pediment, featuring a 3:2:3-light window with King mullions.
The Ashfield Road facade is similar, with four and three-light ground floor windows flanking the entrance, which has an overlight. The first floor contains three and five-light windows. The corner bay features an entrance with Tuscan columns and an entablature with a foliated frieze, along with a tympanum that has a foliated surround. Above this, a canted oriel has three 2-light windows, a cartouche of the City arms, and an octagonal cupola with angle columns, round windows with swags above, and a cupola topped with a button finial.
