Description

The Patience Simpson Memorial, located approximately 160 meters south of the main entrance at Toxteth Park Cemetery in Liverpool, commemorates Patience Simpson, who died in 1872, Palgrave Simpson, who died in 1891, and other members of the Simpson family. The monument is made of stone and features red granite columns. It has a square chamfered base with a flying buttress on one side. A series of Gothic niches with granite shafts and richly detailed foliate capitals frame plaques dedicated to younger family members. At the front, paired shafts and capitals support a standing marble figure of Patience, which is cleaving to a cross. The corners of the monument are adorned with carved angels, and there are decorative bosses on the buttress along with crocketted finials on it and all the niches. The upper part of the shaft tapers and is topped with further red granite shafts, culminating in an elaborate cross. This striking design is well-preserved and is one of the earliest monuments in the cemetery, with the marble figure adding a unique interest to the memorial.
