Description

The rear entrance gateway, steps, and attached boundary walls at Toxteth Park Cemetery were built in 1856 by TD Barry, with possible alterations in 1884. This gateway aligns with the main axis of the cemetery and is enclosed by walls on the south, east, and west sides. Constructed in a Gothic Revival style, similar to the Anglican cemetery chapel, the gateway features two square cells topped with blind traceried octagonal turrets. Each turret has a moulded four-centred arched doorway with shafts and fleurons, which contains a three-lobed, traceried wrought iron turnstile.

On the inner side, each opening is accessed by steps leading to an intermediate landing, which previously had a blind traceried coping along the balustrade wall. A plaque on the eastern side notes that this entrance was opened to the public on 25th March 1884. The outer side of each entrance is flanked by a curved wall and wrought iron railing. Between the entrances is an open arcaded screen with a rusticated plinth and a central buttress.

The boundary walls on either side are made of red brick with blue brick coping and feature buttresses. The wall extends approximately 200 meters to the east and 300 meters to the west of the entrance. The southern wall is taller than the others and has a deep plinth. The return wall to the east is about 350 meters long, while the wall to the west is approximately 500 meters long.
