Description
The Sir John Bent MP Memorial at Toxteth Park Cemetery is a funerary monument built in 1857 in the Classical Revival style. It is constructed from ashlar and features a square base with two steps leading up to a pedestal. Each side of the pedestal has a panel flanked by reversed torches, with one panel inscribed. Above the pedestal is an aedicule supported by square Doric columns, which is topped by an entablature that includes a rosette frieze, pediments adorned with wreaths, and acroteria. Inside the aedicule, there is a square plinth with a wreath on each side, which likely served as the base for a funerary urn. This memorial is among the earliest in Toxteth Park Cemetery and highlights the continued use of Classical style at a time when Gothic styles were becoming more popular, notably without Christian references.
