Description
This is a large churchyard memorial dedicated to Sir John Austen, a Member of Parliament who died in 1742, and his sister Arabella Austen, who died in 1714. The monument is made of ashlar and consists of three square stages. The bottom stage features a moulded cornice and base, with an inscription on the west side. The second stage is smaller and has a cornice along with four recessed panels; it displays skulls and crossed bones on the east side, an empty cartouche on the west, and is also empty on the north and south sides. The considerably smaller third stage is adorned with four scrolled angle buttresses and has a cornice that extends over the buttresses at the angles. At the top, the monument is crowned with a bulbous ball finial.
