Description
The Brewers' Almshouses are a row of six almshouses built in 1856, located on the east side of Blanche Lane in South Mimms. They are constructed from grey brick with red brick dressings and feature a slate roof. The building is one storey high and is divided into three sections by four tall, regularly spaced stacks that have stone-coped parapets. Each section contains a pair of entrances, each with a pointed arch and a quoined and chamfered red brick surround, leading to timber plank doors. Flanking each pair of doors are three-light casement windows, also with quoined and chamfered surrounds, rubbed brick heads, and stone sills. A dentilled brick course runs below the close eaves, and there are three louvred lucarnes and brick kneelers. The end stacks are corbelled out from the walls and feature carved arms in panels. At the rear, there are three flat-roofed extensions. The interior has not been inspected. The Brewers' Almshouses were originally founded in 1687 and relocated from Kitts End to this site in 1856. They are included for their group value and historic interest.
