Description
Clare Hall is a large house located in South Mimms, with its early 17th-century low range to the north and an early 18th-century block to the south, which was enlarged around 1830-1840. There are two mid to late 19th-century additions to the northeast and alterations made in the 20th century. The early range shows traces of the original timber frame and is constructed of brick with 19th-century stone dressings and slate roofs.
The house is complex, featuring two storeys of varying heights and some attics. The south or garden front has five bays from the early 18th century on the left, with ground floor French windows and first floor glazing bar sashes, all topped with rubbed brick heads and a coped parapet. There are three dormers and end stacks. To the right are three bays from around 1830-1840, featuring ground floor sashes and a central entrance. This section has a taller parapet but no attic.
The east return, or road front, continues the plat bands and string course cornice across three bays. The entrance on the right has a large semi-circular fanlight and margin lights surrounding a panelled door, with a blank arcade to the left and first floor glazing bar sashes. There is a one bay addition to the right with a three-light ground floor window and a mansard roof. Further right is a late 19th-century extension with a Serliana entrance adorned with sculpted heads in the soffit of the arch, and a tripartite first floor window with a bracketed sill and stone surround featuring incised ornament.
A heavy string course and cornice are present, and the return to the north has a large external chimney, with curved steps leading out on plan and an elaborate cap. At the rear of the early 18th-century block, facing north, is the original 17th-century range, which has two low storeys, a central entrance, Yorkshire casements, and a right end stack. The interior retains some original timbers in the early range, along with a fireplace featuring side cupboards and cambered brick heads. The early 18th-century block includes panelling and a moulded cornice, as well as Victorian plasterwork. The grounds are landscaped.
