Description

Orchard Mead is a house, originally five almshouses, built in 1844 by Sir G.G. Scott and W.B. Moffatt for Miss J. Trotter of Dyrham Park. The construction features knapped flint facing on clunch walls with red brick dressings, and a tiled roof. The house has a single storey and five bays. The central bay is slightly projecting with a gabled front, containing a single entrance and two windows. The door has a four-centred arched head within a chamfered brick surround. A dedicatory plaque above the door reads '1844/These almshouses/were erected/in accordance with the wish of/Miss Jean Trotter/of/Dyrham Park'. The front has brick plinth and cornice. The windows are two-light casements with chamfered and quoined brick surrounds. The roof has four tall, cross-axial ridge stacks. Two are at the gable ends, a single shaft flanks either side of the central bay, and the stacks have hexagonal bases with diagonal shafts. The gables have brick parapets and kneelers. Mid-20th century extensions have been added to the gable ends and the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
