Description

The Thomas Pennington Memorial, located approximately 145 meters south of the main entrance at Toxteth Park Cemetery in Liverpool, is a funerary monument dated 1886 dedicated to Thomas Pennington. It is made of white marble with a granite base and features an eclectic style that is predominantly Classical. The monument has a stepped granite base and an inscribed plinth that supports a panelled pedestal with a plinth and cornice.

On the west side, there is a sculptured figure of an angel holding a memorial scroll, set within a moulded doorway that contains panelled doors. Above this doorway is an inscribed lintel with a dove perched on it. The doorway leads into a tall sarcophagus that is richly decorated with a full entablature, acroteria, and masks. The west side of the sarcophagus features a pedimented panel that includes the date, a festoon, and a portrait medallion. This monument is exceptional, adorned with rich symbolic ornamentation, much of which is not Christian, and is highly idiosyncratic.
