LIVERPOOL, SMITH DOWN ROAD, Thomas Pennington Memorial approximately 145m south of main entrance at Toxteth Park Cemetery

(Formerly listed as Thomas Pennington Memorial approx. 180m S of entrance at Toxteth Park Cemetery)

GV II

Funerary monument. Dated 1886. To Thomas Pennington. White marble with granite base. Ecclectic style, predominantly Classical. Stepped granite base. Inscribed plinth, carrying a panelled pedestal with plinth and cornice. On the W side, the sculptured figure of an angel clasping a memorial scroll. The figure is set in a moulded doorway containing panelled doors, with an inscribed lintel on which perches a dove. The doorway extends above the pedestal into the sarcophagus above. Tall sarcophagus with full entablature, heavily enriched, with acroteria and masks. On the W side, a pedimented panel with date, festoon and portrait medallion. This is an exceptional monument, rich in symbolic ornament, little of it Christian, and highly idiosyncratic.
