Description

The Royal Hotel is a public house dating from the mid-19th century, with later tile facing. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings, and has a hipped slate roof. The building is three storeys high and originally three bays wide, with a canted corner bay and three bays extending onto Langton Street. The ground floor is faced with glazed tiles featuring arabesque decoration, with a cornice above. A sill band and top cornice are also present. The ground-floor windows are casements, with a paired window in the third bay. First and second-floor windows have wedge lintels and are sash windows without glazing bars; those in the outer bays are tripartite. Central entrances are located on both facades, and each entrance has a small-paned overlight. The corner features an iron overthrow supporting a lantern. The interior retains simple wood fittings and panelling, with a section that is gas-lit. The building is of special interest due to the well-preserved polychrome tilework.
