Description
The boundary wall and entrance gatepiers at Holt House were built around 1879. They are made of regularly coursed squared sandstone blocks topped with chamfered ashlar copings. The wall runs approximately 80 metres along the Ullet Road frontage of Holt House and its gardens, standing about 1.5 metres high.
At the western end of the wall, there is a pair of gatepiers that rise to 2.5 metres. These gatepiers feature recessed centre panels and oversailing depressed pyramidal caps, along with the remains of boarded and panelled double gates. At the eastern end, a second pair of gatepiers stands 1.75 metres high, showcasing rock-faced centre panels and very shallow pyramidal caps. A stepped section of walling extends to the boundary of an adjacent lodge, which is not of special interest.
This boundary wall and its gatepiers define the street frontage of Holt House and are an important part of its setting. They are listed for their group value.
