Description

The Ullet Road Unitarian Church, built in 1898 by T. and P. Worthington, is a chapel constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, designed in an elaborate late Gothic style. The building features a nave and aisles, a narthex, and an organ loft, all aligned north-south.

The nave consists of seven bays, supported by gabled and corner buttresses at the west end. It includes three-light perpendicular windows in the clerestory and smaller two-light windows in the aisles. The narthex has three bays with a colonnetted splayed doorway and a panel on the parapet indicating the date of construction. It also features bronze doors in the Arts and Crafts style and a large wheel window with a carved angel at the apex. The gable is enhanced by a feature resembling a bell-cote. The organ loft has a cross gable with a five-light feature, two of which are glazed, and a small polygonal apse.

Inside, the nave is adorned with stone arcades supported by round columns and passage aisles, and it has a shallow timber roof resting on corbelled wall piers. The chancel features low walls that form pulpits and wooden choir stalls, with canopies over the stalls on the south side. The church retains its original light fittings and stained glass windows designed by Burne-Jones. The vestry and library to the south contain original panelling, fireplaces, and bookcases. The vestry has a domical vault painted with the Cardinal Virtues by G. Moira, while the library boasts a vaulted ceiling with a painting of the Pursuit of Truth, also by G. Moira. The church, along with the Church Hall, is recognized as one of the most elaborate Non-conformist ensembles in the country.
