Description
The Simpson Tomb at St Mary's Church is a tomb built around 1861. It is made of ashlar sandstone and designed in the shape of a small spire supported by four columns with decorative capitals at the corners of a sloping gabled casket. The tomb stands on a low chamfered ashlar plinth, which is surrounded by low ornamental railings. Behind the columns, four steep gables rise, leading up to the spire, which currently lacks a finial. The sides of the casket feature recessed cusped rectangular panels, one of which has the inscription: 'In memory of Mary, beloved wife of Joseph Simpson Esq. Of Didsbury, near Manchester who died 20th May 1861 aged 43 years.'
