Description

This building is a barn and shippon located approximately 30 metres south-east of Lower Pimbo Farmhouse, dating from the early to mid 18th century. It has been enlarged and altered over time. The structure is made of watershot coursed sandstone rubble and features an asbestos sheet roof that is hipped at the left end.

The barn is arranged in an L-plan, consisting of a 3-bay shippon range on an east-west axis, which includes an added bay at the west end, and a 2-bay barn wing on the south side of the first bay. There is also an added outshut at the east end of the shippon range. The north front of the shippon range is two storeys high and has former shippon doorways in the first and third bays, although the third bay doorway is blocked. In the centre, there is a feeding passage doorway with a stable door, and external steps across the third bay lead to loft doorways in both this bay and the added fourth bay, with the latter featuring a re-used heavily-studded double-layered plank door.

On the east front of the barn, there is a central waggon doorway with a pegged wooden doorcase and a stop-chamfered lintel, flanked by double batten-and-board doors that are protected by a shallow porch with splayed cheeks, which are now integrated with additions on both sides.

Inside, the barn boasts a complete set of fine kingpost roof trusses, including the hip and the junction, which features an open timber frame at the first floor. All the trusses are pegged and chamfered with run-out stops. The former lateral shippon stalls have been removed. This barn forms a group with Lower Pimbo Farmhouse, which is located approximately 30 metres to the north-west.
