Description
The Up Holland Tunnel west portal is a railway tunnel portal built between 1846 and 1848 for the Liverpool and Bury Railway Company, designed by engineers James and William Thomson. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a horseshoe arch with a deep splayed reveal and a roll-moulded surround. The retaining wall is made of channelled rock-faced masonry and includes broad flanking pilasters, a plain cornice, and a parapet with a central upstand. This structure forms a group with a railway bridge located approximately 400 meters to the west.
