Description

This is an early 19th-century barn and shippon range located immediately northwest of Combeshead Farmhouse. The building is constructed of slate rubble with a slate roof covered in grout and slurry, featuring gabled ends, except for the shippon which has a hipped end. The plan is L-shaped; the barn runs down a slope with a loading door situated at the higher ground level on its right end, and a further loading door at the rear, also at a higher level. A wide barn doorway is centrally positioned on the front elevation, sheltered by a corrugated iron canopy and with plank double doors. Adjacent to the barn, at a higher level and at a right angle, is a shippon with four doorways having segmental stone arches (one now blocked), two openings leading to a loft, and a single window above. A loading door to the hay loft is located at the rear of the shippon on the higher ground level. An unusual feature is a row of pigeon holes below the eaves in the end wall of the shippon. At the lower end of the barn, a roofless and derelict farm building is present. The buildings are sited on slate bedrock on a steeply sloping piece of land. The interior has not been inspected.
