Description

Creber Farmhouse is an early 19th-century farmhouse constructed from slate rubble, with a slate-hung front down to the ground floor window sill level and a small slate section on the right side. It features a scantle slate hipped roof and large rendered interval details at the sides, along with an axial stack in the rear wing. The building has a two-room plan in the front range, with a smaller parlour on the right that has a shallow dairy behind it, and a larger hall/kitchen on the left. A central entrance with a porch leads to a lobby and a straight staircase situated between the two front rooms. Behind the left-hand room is an integral wing that contains the kitchen, with an outhouse behind it that has a loft above, forming an overall L-shaped plan. The two front rooms are heated by wide chimney stacks, while the kitchen is heated by an axial stack located between the kitchen and the outhouse. There is also a back staircase that rises from the kitchen in the rear wing.

The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high and features an almost symmetrical three-window range, with the windows and doorway slightly skewed to the right. The early 19th-century windows include 16-pane sashes, with a 12-pane sash in the centre of the first floor, all having slate sills. The central doorway has a flush nine-panel door with reeding, accompanied by a slate rubble porch topped with a scantle slate hipped roof and a side entrance. At the back, there are early 19th-century two-light casements, and the ground floor windows of the dairy have stanchion bars. The back doorway mirrors the front door with a similar panelled design. At the rear of the main range, where it meets the rear wing, there is a scantle slate pentice roof with a stone side wall that houses a pump with a granite trough. The rear wing also has external stone stairs leading up to a plank door on the first floor, which is covered by a slate canopy supported by wooden cantilevers.

The interior has not been inspected but is believed to be virtually intact, showcasing early 19th-century joinery, including panelled doors. Creber Farmhouse is a remarkably unaltered example of an early 19th-century farmhouse with an interesting layout.
